Wooden mast repair

Just about ready to relaunch my IP24 after antifouls etc. I`d dropped the wooden mast (25 feet) to varnish etc and repair some rot at base. The mast is tabernacle stepped and I used a rig to lower it. On attempting to haul it up the mast snapped at the last 5 feet - it seems there was a weakness around a fitting there with evidence with evidence of water ingress causing some localised rot there.

Whilst I`m thankful this happened while ashore I`m now going to remove mast for a thorough repair and use the boat as a mobo whilst doing this. Anyone recommend a supplier in the north east for good quality sitka spruce or know of a mast that I might cannibalise? Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks

David

If brave and have some time. Look up DuckWorks on the web and read about how to make birdsmouths mast (if yours is a bit far gone) I found it quite easy for a 4mtr stick, boom and yard. Next up is a 23ft unstayed mast, with lots of taper. The system allows for plenty of staggered scarfs as I can't easily get long light pine. They recommend resorcinol glue, use epoxy it is easier.

+1 for the above.
I made a 14 and 21 foot mast with the above method and epoxy (but didn't taper just used a 4 foot tapered solid plug)
