What is the best wood to use to turn and shape as a replacement cleat? Shape is round - circumference approx 6 inches and 18inches long. The cleat is housed in two bronze collars. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
If I understand this correctly we are talking about Clyde Cleats here. As far as I know teak would be best and if you can't get hold of that then what about Iroko.
Hope this helps.
I've used Iroko without any problems, in fact during a contretemps with 5 marineros and a spanish fishing boat the bronze "holder" broke rather than the wood - I've always wonder if I'd used a softer wood whether that would have broke first. That was 3 years ago and I still haven't found an identical replacement so if you see a clyde-cleat missing one upstand on its port quarter feel free to ask for full story.
Thank you both. Yes we are talking Clyde Cleats. BTW your responses led me to the site www.classicmarine.co.uk which looks to be a very useful source if you need a replacement collar /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
The chap who runs Classicmarine is one of those rare people who really know their stuff and can explain it in a way that is easy to understand. On his site he has some good guides that I think are very helpfull. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
