Wooden boats, nice looking, BUT how are they?

The thing about that boat was there was so much wasted space. I now realise how good she was at sea, it did worry me alot, like what if a rental canal boat rams me and when in rough sea she would flex(I know that's normal)and if we got into really rough seas I would be ****ting my self what if I break her? I now don't have as much worry which is nice. I has some nice super Polaris badges for her which were about 3 foot long. Thanks for the nice comments.

Woods Silver Light - wooden boat req maintenance

Hello all,

am interested in buying this Woods Silver Light from around 1968 (photo attached)..but it needs planking doing (60ft worth apparently).. how big of a job/how expensive do you think this will be? It is such a lovely craft, I would really like to buy it and have it done, but if it's prohibitively expensive, it may not be worthwhile I guess. Being wooden hulled, I also guess they need this kind of repair from time to time ? Secondly and less importantly, any opinions on how I fix delamination which has happened in a couple of areas? Thank goodness you are all here and know these particular cruisers! kindest regards, Jason

Hello Jason

Is the damage from impact or rot, I can't see your pic.

The first thing I would be considering is a thorough structual survey from a recognised consultant to establish there is no more hidden surprises.

Someone has already had a quote for repair to come up with the 60 super feet number.

If you keep the external protection up, bilges dry and fastners (screws etc.) sealed, you should be fine.
 
60' of replanking due to rot is quite a job.
I'd be surprised if the frame and keel would be perfectly sound, and if they're also badly affected, you'd better run than walk away.
I can only second what AM said, you definitely must have an expert thoroughly checking the boat.

PS: just curious, what sort of delamination are you talking about?
