Hi Folks,

As Mischief is undergoing some extended work, and not doing any sailing, for a year or more, and will be moored on a river, I have heard that it's possible to get a level of insurance that is legal, but does not require a survey. Frankly, at this stage, a survey is pointless as I know only too well what needs doing. For the time being though, Mischief floats, and we can stay aboard comfortably for weekends with no problem.

Can anyone offer advice as to alternative insurance arrangement that will allow us to continue without the imminent 5 yr survey that our current insurers are insistent upon?

Thanks,

Tim

Probably unlikely you will get all risks insurance on a boat that is not seaworthy, but third party liability should be no problem. You may also be able to get some cover on the boat while you are sorting it out. Try Simon Winter Marine 08449886134.

BTW there is no legal requirement to insure a boat, but normally the owner of the mooring will insist on third party cover to use their facilities.

Builders Risks

When restoring Roach I insured her under builders risks. She was on land though. As each restoration stage changed the amount I could insure her for could go up in relationship to the improvements made.

I am not sure how this could work afloat. I got builders through St. Margarets.

I used Blue Fin insurance brokers for my 36! motor boat which is out of the water for 2 years. Policy came from AXA , under the banner of Richard Skinner Marine.Excellent cover costing £132 for a year and offer no claims bonus, covers boat for £25,000.00, whilst it is undergoing restoration.

Basic boat insurance

Thanks for this post, it's opened up new names that we may look at for all risks cover. Our boat is wood and 60 years old next year. The only company I could find for fully comp insurance was St Margarets, a bit expensive though and requires a full survey.

I also know that I could get 3rd party insurance, no questions asked, no survey required, for £69 from the Basic Boat Liability Company. Google 'em

Hope this helps, Stu

Yes, it is very dificult to find a broker who understands the cover you're looking for. It sounds like you're going to be working on the boat when it is laid up afloat. Joliette is insured through St.Margrets (or whatever they're changing their name to now) but they were of no help for my Settimo Velo (http://www.facebook.com/?sk=2361831622#!/group.php?gid=179427293999) which I am restoring undercover ashore. I found that Euromarine Insurance Services understood my requirements. Their website is www.euromarine-ltd.com. Renny Gold was my contact there. The insurer behind the broker is Aviva.
