Bit of a basic question but woodwork has never been my strongpoint! I've stripped and sanded the varnish off my washboards due to a bit of water ingress. Unfortunately due to a bit of over enthusiastic sanding I've gone through the veneer in places and have exposed the underlying ply. I was just going to apply sikens or similar rather than revarnish, but the ply will show up badly. Can I just get a piece of veneer and epoxy it over the board? I dont really want to go to the bother of remaking the board from scratch.

3mm veneer is relatively cheap and can be epoxied on, may or may not stick to well to previous veneer depending on what it is made from. However if you can remove old veneer first. Should not be to difficult to cut new wash boards.

Personally, I would make a new washboard.

A repair with veneer is possible but you'll have to get the old board completely flat before you put it on, otherwise it will look awful. When you stick the veneer on you'll have to hold it down which isn't easy on something the size of a washboard....unless you set up a vacuum bag.

By the time you've done it you could have made half a dozen new boards.

Repairs are always possible but a couple of points to watch, if you sanded through the veneer you have probably reduced the thickness of the surrounding veneer so you end up cutting out a much larger area. You also need to match the veneer for grain and the colour will also be difficult to blend due to bleaching fron UV

I would tend to agree that the new wash board would probably be my option.

I need to make a new washboard
Went down to my local boat yard for a piece of teak faced ply.
My washboard is 18mm thick.
Was recommended to buy a thin piece of teak faced marine ply and stick it onto a standard piece of Marine ply. Much cheaper this way.
Cheers
