I reckon what ever varnish you have handy. Touch up re-varnish as necessary. It's going to get damaged so the weather will get under the varnish, just try to tart it up before it gets too bad.

I smartened mine up by throwing it away and buying a new plastic one for less than 20 quid on eBay

It's the mounting plate for the bracket not the outboard do I even need one. Or could I mount the bracket direct on the transom (it has a backing plate on the inside)
