I need to fit a piece of wood in my cot pit at the transom.
I have found a wood called Kerwing or something like. Has any one any information on this wood Can I be lazy with it like Teak and leave it to the salt water to protect it.
Or do I have to treat it and varnish it. ( I hate varnishing.)

Most of us hate varnishing! Have a look at Burgess Woodsealer, I think it's better than sliced bread!

The name of the wood that you are trying to think of is called Keruing, it's a relatively cheap heavy red-brown African (?) hardwood, rather splintery, but durable. It's used for things like the flat-beds on lorries. I used it in my work shop years ago to make bench-tops and it served its purpose, indoors and varnished.

However, I can't tell you what it would be like untreated in your cock-pit, but if it were a cheap substitute for teak then it would have been used as such years ago. So I suggest it would not be suitable.

Keruang is used for buffers as it has long tough fibres and will take a lot of punishment. I would say you could leave it intreated, but watch out for long splinters
