just to bounce some ideas off you chaps - I've got wooden toe rails on my boat that look like oak or Iroko (or simerlar). they have been a bit neglected by the previous owner and are very gray and starting to look "dry"

What I'm wondering is what to put on them

1 teak oil - but am worried that sometimes it can result in the wood darking and blackening

2 oxalic acid( to lighten them) followed by varnish

3 Boiled linseed oil

4 tung (or however its spelt) oil

5 Sadolin



any opinions or further suggestions ?

If you want a brand new teak look, use some of the restorer products I'm sure other forumites will recommend.

For me, I just love the look of grey teak. Just use lots of water, with gentle wiping uing a 3M white scotchpad (non-abrasive), and it will look the bees knees.

HATE varnish!!

a friend mixes Tung Oil & Teak Oil together with superb results.
the finish is clear like varnish without being tacky/sticky

I have iroko toe rails and have tried quite a few products, teak oil I find impossible to keep up with especially in the winter , then it goes all horrid (blackens) and you have to start again. If you simply keep it washed with salt water the grey looks quite pleasant, I have done mine with Cetol natural which doesn't form a skin like varnish so does not fall off, just wash down and add one coat every season, stays good for years. Had good results with this over the years.

Sadolin is a good outdoor household product but does not really look right on a boat as it darkens the wood too much to my mind.
