Wood treatment for wooden boathook?

Olewill, I like the wrist loop idea. We've just bought our boat. She was very scruffy and we are sprucing her up. This first time may be the only time we ever do the brightwork.

Gus, I like oiled wood and wondered about (any of the various) oils i have. However, I'm not sure that it is any easier than Woodskin, especially as we'll be doing that anyway.

With your mooring buoy incident I would be very wary of having a wrist loop at best you might join the boathook for a swim at worst suffer a nasty wrist dislocation.

Good point. Maybe if it had a fail point in the loop. It's getting complicated...for a stick. There's a moderate chance it will stay grey and unimproved anyway!

If you have a wrist loop on the end you can store the boathook up a shroud, in the traditional manner, if you make something to take the business end on deck. Just pass the wrist loop round the shroud and drop it over the end of the boathook and shove it up the shroud. No good if you are fussing about windage, though.

Loop of cord for the wrist should be fairly loose so that it can in fact slip off. It does however give a last point to grip if you are losing the boat hook. It also can facilitate dropping the boat hook so you have 2 hands to pull ropes in without losing the boat hook. olewill
