We need to replace some 1 inch mahogany quarter bead at the coach roof/deck junction. It was leaking because it wasn't bedded properly when first installed; it was impossible to remove in one piece hence the need for replacement. Does anyone know of a timber supplier in the Essex/East London who would do small amounts like this and what type of mahogany we should ask for (apparently there are many types)?

An associated question - what would people suggest as the best bedding compound?

Thanks

Toby

Not quite East London, but South London Hardwoods near Croydon sells all kinds of mahogany.

When I did this job on my boat I used Brazilian Mahogany but I bought it from Robbins Timber Ltd, Bristol because they are used to supplying boatbuilding timber and they do mail order. I got them to machine it to the profile I wanted and I was very pleased with their service.

ps How much do you want? I may have some already machined to shape that would suit you.

These people are usually helpful and cater for retail sales to some extent.

They do stock mouldings in meranti and will run bespoke mouldings in any timber, but you will need to pay extra for any special cutters.
Alternatively you could buy square sawn section and run your own with a router.
Be aware that standard 90 degree section probably won't work, it needs to be slightly "open" to enable a tight fit at the outer edges.

As for bedding compound it depends how traditional you want to be.
Sikaflex if you want it to work and is permanent.
White lead, cow dung & fish oil boiled with bones, if you want to maintain OGA integrity.

I tried Brooks but they weren't interested in such small quantities! I need two lengths, 3.5 meters and 1.4 meters of 1 inch quarter bead.

Not sure about the cow dung and boiled fish approach but some people recommend non-setting builders mastic.
