Does anyone know of water-based or alcohol-based wood preservatives?  I am renovating a Saltram 24 – GRP hull with wooden superstructure.  I have removed some rotten timber and some wet rot has got into adjacent solid mahogany.  I have chiselled away what was obviously affected in the surface of the mahogany and would like to apply some wood preservative as a precautionary measure.  However I shall be using epoxy as adhesive and final surface protection (for marine ply and solid mahogany).  I have been advised by West Systems suppliers of epoxy that oil-based wood preservative affects the adhesive properties of epoxy, but water-based or alcohol-based preservative may be OK (‘but do a test piece first’). Can anyone offer advice please?

John at tradboats has waterbased epoxy, wich will soak/capillary into your mahogany and preserve it, excellent stuff, I can reccomend it, just what you need.
Epoxy aheasive will stick to it no worries. If you are fitting filler pieces or battens or whatever, consider using sikaflex to bed/glue them, as its flexible and allows for some movemebt and will keep the water out.

I would question the need for additional preservative if you are then going to use epoxy. I have found neat epoxy (ie not thickened) will penetrate adequately and seal the wood. Equally, if you have localised rot in the ply and replacing the whole panel is not necessary, it is possible to soak epoxy into the inner cores provided they are dry. This is most suitable if the panel is either not visible or is going to be painted such as on a deck.
I have been using epoxies for repairs on my mahogany and ply boat for more than 20 years using different combinations of laminating with either wood or glass cloth re-inforcement and thickened epoxy as filler or adhesive. With experience you can achieve good results both structurally and cosmetically.

u may use methanol 50% + tar creosote oil 50+ 1% copper napthenate. check wheather creosote is not banned in your country.
this is best and traditinal and proved way
