Arrived in Stavanger PM 27 June & stayed overnight with Family.
Saturday 28 June:
Walked about in the city as preparations for the Beach Volleyball World Tour http:// http://www.robin.no/stavanger.html.
Arrived at agreed spot for takeover of boat at 4PM. No boat, but agent present to say that boat location had changed. In principle no problem as it was only 20 min away.
Arrived at boat with bags & all sort of stuff as one need for a week in the fjords. Checked boat over, including a quick drop over side to check below waterline, props etc. Signed for the boat & content. All four of us busy to un-pack and prepare boat for sea. Left mooring at 6PM precisely, sitting on top with sea flat as pond. Cruised slowly for 1 ½ hrs., to a nice spot just NE of Stavanger called ‘Rossøy’, where we dropped anchor (stern winch with remote control) and stuck bow towards shore and tied up close enough to jump ashore from the bow ladder. The kids donned their wetsuits and went exploring whilst I got the BBQ going. Wonderful & still evening afloat.
Sunday 29 June:
Woke up about 8:30 to a beautiful morning. Prepared breakfast and sat outside in shorts & t-shirt. Met up with some friends who came out in their 18 ft speedboat. Unfortiunately, about 4PM weather turned grey and it started to rain. Friends wife not too keen to get wet going home, so we gave them a tow to Stavanger and decided to take the girls to the movies. Spent the night in Stavanger Harbour.
Monday 30 June:
Woke up at 8:30 again and was met with a beautiful sunny morning. 19 deg. C, clear sky, no wind and temperature rising rapidly. Left harbour at 10:30 and headed slowly towards Sjernarøyane with the girls on the front deck sunbathing. About one hour into the slow trip the girls wanted to og fishing, so we stopped the engines & brought out the fishing rods. After about 45 min, we had caught enough for a wonderful meal, so stopped and left for ’Talgje’, a small island part of the islands collectively known as ’Sjernarøyane’, where we moored up in a nice quiet lagoon. Fresh fish on BBQ and had a wonderful evening.
Tuesday 1 July:
Another great sunny day… girls in and out of the water most of the morning & left the island about 3PM to get some fresh bread & other stuff at ‘Helgøysund’, a small island community about two miles away. After re-filling the stocks, we left for ’Vestre Bokn’ which is North of Stavanger. Got moored up in another quiet lagoon and spent the evening ashore with the girls exploring the area.
Wednesday 2 July:
Sunny day, slight NW wind, about 23 deg. C. Just chilling out and relaxing. Left for ’Skudenes’ late PM for a boat festival http://www.skudefestivalen.no. Picked up some rope with port prop. This just in front of a cruise ship heading towards us from Stbd… got hold on bridge on VHF explained the situation and she ”kindly” altered course avoiding us. Limped on one engine towards ’Skudenes’ and once moored up cleared the prop. Went into centre of ’Skudenes’ & joined the party. Wonderful place, very scenic and great people. Good fun with lots of live music and various arrangements in pubs and in centre of town.
Thursday 3 July:
Found a small island along ’Vestre Bokn’ called ’Kjeøy’ and moored up. Tight, rocky access, but once in a very safe mooring with good holding ground for the anchor. Could blow gale force wind from any direction here & you’ll still be safe.
Friday 4 July:
Left for an Island just outside Stavanger as we were to hand the boat back on Saturday morning. Took ’the long way home’ and cruised for several hours in the fjords, amongst the islands & shallow passages and Spent a wonderful evening on an island watching the sunset.
Saturday 5 July:
Handed the boat back & checked in to hotell & caught some of the last games of the Beach Volleyball World Tour.
Sunday 6 July:
Lazy morning in hotel & left for flight to Aberdeen PM.

Summary:
One wonderful week with brilliant weather (one PM with some rain), but the rest was beautiful weather & close to 25 deg. C during the day. Great cruising and wonderful area to have a vacation in. We were of course very lucky with the weather. Great to be cruising in the fjords with little tidal differences and knowing that once moored up close to shore in secluded bays, you're quite safe lying there with little or no chances of damaging the boat. Got some pictures, but need to set up in hosted area.

Chartered boat....

A 1987 nimbus 4000 Fly with 2 x Vlvo 41's (192 bhp on shafts). Slightly under powered with wrong prop on port engine, so only got 16 - 17 K cruising (500 rpm too low). Approx 1,800 hrs on engines. Well equipped (extra 150 L coolbox for beer & wine & plenty of food from M&S in Lazarette), Radar, GPS, AP, VHF, Heater(for water & ), shorepower, bow thruster etc., was comfortable enough for 4 (two adults and two 12 year old girls). good standard of boat with some upgrades and well kept.

Cost @ approx £1,800 for the week & about one hour cruising each day (don't need more to find nice and sheltered areas) gave a fuel bill of approx £200.

Glad you enjoyed your trip, I know all the places you visited as I am lucky enough to live here. There is lots more to see over here I have been here for 7 yrs and still haven't seen it all.I work in the marine industry so often get to meet Brits when they are over, if anyone is contemplating a visit please get in touch and I will meet up with you. Had a great dinner on board 'Tidos' a few weeks a go as they sailed through Stavanger on their way to the Lofoten Islands.

Regards Steve.

Was brought up in the area & spent most week-ends around the area, so trip was to re-visit places & to have my daughter see what's there. What suprised me was the fact that there was relatively few boats out there ... did expect that the 13 years I have been "away" would have led to much more boats than what we experienced. (Know week-ends are busy though).... Have you moored in the little lagoon on Kjeøy (Vestre Bokn) before?? (little evidence of boating). Will be back in Stavanger within the next couple of weeks, so may send a PM. Also may be in area late Aug. beg Sept, when we have chartered SS Loyal again for a couple of days (as we did during ONS last year).

A pleasure... just different kind of boating from what we get in the UK... Highly recommended as a change.
Weather in the SW coast of Norway benefits from the Gulf Stream and is normally quite stable in late June / early July. Of course there are poor days, but it is normally comfortable temperatures at that time of the year. Perhaps the best way of lookig at it is to say that you go there for the scenery & experience of the cruising ground amongst the 1,000's of islands, and if the weather is like we had, it could become a real memorable experience. (My 12 year old daughter & friend already want to go back .... plus my wife says that we now definetly need a boat, but that she wants something bigger than 36 ft., so have been told to look above 45, but to stop at 60 ... things are looking quite good).

clearly you live a charmed life - next you will be telling us the your wife is more than happy to give up a few pairs of shoes if it helps you financially get the 'right' boat!

Shoes ??? What makes you think she needs to give up shoes... and what is the big thing about that anyway?

If you have a mutual interest, surely you aim to achieve that in the most conveinient and expedient way, whilst managing your life to the best of your abilities. Afterall, I do not intend to give up my old Jag or Ducati for this, so why should she need to give up shoes?

Afterall, she has at least six pairs already..., so why the need for more... :)
