Trying to get to grips with not owning a boat. Thoughts tied up with age related incompetence, aches and pain, and yawning boredom. I find myself wandering around the marina looking at 30' day boats (which I think I could still handle) but it's not the same. There's a thrill of anxiety and elation when you can't see land, only rolling seas, and every cough and splutter from the engines causes a pause in your breathing. So where can I get that fix?
I'd probably try an affair if I had the energy or enthusiasm, or buy a Harley, no, a Triumph if my wife would let me. So it looks like a caravan for me, and walking my new dog. But I doubt that I will ever lose that desire to feel the deck shifting underneath me and the smell of marine diesel in my nostrils. So enjoy it when you can.

S*d it bought another boat, though much smaller than our previous one and intend enjoying our later years boating on the river. With just occasional forays out to sea.

Hi Bertramdriver......and hello to Coco.

I understand your angst, and the feel of deep blue water slipping beneath your boat is truly magical.......unfortunately my SWMBO was rather less enthusiastic on being out of sight of land!
The Harley is a good idea, and you will find it very economical compared with even a modest boat. I'm not paranoid, but when I go out on mine I know that everyone is trying to kill me......great fun though
Don't be too hard on caravans, I've had a lot of fun in them (motorhomes too)......the opportunity to travel, enjoy nature but still enjoy some 'home comforts'.

However if you are close to the Thames (Oxford?) how about a river boat?
Ok the water under the hull won't be quite so 'blue'......you won't feel the exciting throb of sitting on some big engines (the Harley can do that, believe me).....but there's some beautiful countryside between Oxford and Windsor......and I'm sure little Coco will appreciate all of the bank side amenities.
As my SWMBO would say.......'You can see the coast'. (Both sides!)
