If you were out in the Western Solent yesterday afternoon, you would have heard the response to a Mayday from Wise Words, a Fairline 48 with 10 people aboard that the coast guard was saying had hit rocks and was taking on water off Alum Bay.

The coastguard and RNLI response was swift and professional as always but it was all very frightening to listen to.

Wise Words was keep afloat and towed into Lymington Yacht Haven. I saw her there in the hoist slings at around 2000. The lifeboat crew still seemed to be pumping water out.

I do hope nobody was hurt or ended up in the water. Sad that such a beautiful boat has been damaged. It must have been a terrible shock for all concerned and a lesson to all of us.

No photos - that would have been taking advantage of someone else’s mysery. I think this may be the boat in question - https://macyachtcharter.co.uk/ - this suggests it is a charter boat.

I don't think it's taking advantage unless you're trying to sell the photos. And it's not like anyone has died or by the sounds of it the boat sank.

Often, these pictures can be quite revealing....

About 19.30 as I headed home I saw her with Yarms lifeboat in an alongside tow heading into Lymington.

Seems to be a weekly event at the moment, at least 2 motor boats hit the Island last weekend, one on Bembridge Ledge and one other at the Needles.

I went out on Wise Words at the boat show last year when it was chartered for the platinum experience boat.

personally I think its about time the island moved further south, there is one common denominator with all these events, the island. A simple move south by say 2 miles would give everyone another few minutes to see it therefore allowing more time to plan for avoidance.

It just needs the edges tidied up a bit

that's an alternative, or a serious dredging effort to give 3m depth all round the Solent at low water springs to within 2m of the island... then perhaps a row of buoys attached to motion sensors so if a boat is detected within 10m of the island a siren sounds alerting the boat owner he is approaching an obstacle (i.e. The Isle of Wight) and must turn about...

or maybe folk should just go about boating with a less cavalier attitude.... (but I don't think that will be a popular option...)

This is a silly idea - the ferries would use their GPS to go to the original location of the dock, and all the passengers would fall into the water as they disembarked.

Update on this... Wise Words is on the hard standing at Lymington Yacht Haven. The starboard side prop is folded in half, the rudder looks damaged and there may be skeg damage too. The port side prop is also ruined and the prop shaft has been dragged out of the tube - the cutlass bearings are some distance clear of the tube. I assume that's where the water got in.

I would have thought you might not want that, James. An extra 10% on all those trips to Yarmouth...:D

Sounds as though it didn't quite pass over a rock. Any idea which? There's the one in the middle of Alum Bay or the Shingles or the Varvassi** to choose from in open water round about there I guess. If not something on the edge of the island.

**Not an actual rock of course, but offering similar potential.

Where in Alum did this actually happen?

A minor pedantic point of clarification, boat in question is a Phantom 48 on shafts, the Squadron 48 is on pods.

You could put up some speed cameras as well and call it a smart fairway

WW on the left, needles tour rib alongside Yarmouth and police launch on the right, I’m guessing she hit one of the rock formations in the actual bay

That doesn’t look close to any rocks - they must have drifted from their original position. The rock in the bay is much closer in.
