The topsides (white GRP) of my 1985 35 ft Wauquiez Pretorien got scratched in several places. The yard (Turkish marina) suggest filling scratches then painting all over with Awlgrip (expensive) or International (cheaper). Told 'about 12 coats' Painting cabin roof etc also recomended. Assured vessel 'will look like new'. Cost about £2 k. Grateful for thoughts

My local GRP man reckoned that it was about the same price to spray a new gelcoat and the enabled easy recovery from a scratch, whereas repairing damaged awlgrip is not a simple job

If you can afford it, go for Awlgrip.

We left our boat in the water when we went to the carbbean last winter for about 6 weeks, and the guard wire broke, allowing the fenders to drop below the finger pier. This ended up with the boat rubbing against the finger pier for quite a long time with consequent bad-looking scratches.

But when we took the boat into the yard for repairs, they polished out all the damage, can't see any sign of it. And they repaired where somebody had scraped the bow, so it can be repaired. Not expensive either.

Awlgrip is an epoxy based paint with a harder finish than gel coat, and the boat does look beautiful when done.

Can confirm what sailorman said - his boat looks like new.

Our previous boat need some "cosmetics" when she broke her mooring 2 years ago. Universal was applied - after 6 months looked very dull.

If I ever find myself in such a situation again -> Awlgrip.

Awlgrip, International & Sikkens are all part of the same company. At least Awlgrip does not say it is "not for marine use"

That's a VERY cheap price for an 35 ft Awlgrip spray job..... Have you seen another yacht they've done? Done well Awlgrip a superb finish, and as hard-wearing as the gelcoat.
