Hi there,

Asked my boatyard for a quote to fit these two.... OUCH!! They want £480 + VAT to fit them both - now at £55 per hr + VAT that's nearly 10hrs work???

Surely not?

So, has anyone fitted these, and if so, what's involved, I will try and do it myself unless someone says DON'T DO IT.

Looking at the instructions it doesn't seem that hard, the only thing that's confusing me a bit is there is a wire that goes to the NMEA Out on an external unit. Now surely if this is a GPS Plotter, the NMEA is coming out from this unit and into anything else, so why would you wire it up to another units NMEA out??

I can see that the VHF will reqire wiring to an NMEA output but not the Plotter surely??

Thanks

No, things like the GPS mushroom, an AIS set, MOB device, windex, etc etc etc etc, would have their NMEA-out connected to the NMEA-in on your plotter. Remember to fit a multiplexer if you fit more than one, so they don't overtalk each other. Your plotter can only listen to one at a time.

AHA understood.

So my plotter produces an NMEA signal itself, however what you say is that if I fit something ELSE that also produces an NMEA signal I need to connect THAT to this lead.
Now as I am not doing that, I assume I just tape these up in case I need them at a later date??

Thank you

I did mine, electrically and NMEA wise was ok, the instruction book tells you what colour NMEA (data) goes to what colour on the radio - bth units SH, like mine, so it really is quite obvious.

Don't forget a fuse in the live (poss) feed, Maplin of Halford will help with these.

Good Luck

Just out of interest who quoted you?

Blue Water in Weymouth.

Thanks for that wiring diagram MarieK - and it's great cos that's the exact setup we'll have, but no AIS or Pilot etc. So I'll just follow that, and tape up all the connections I don't think I need.

And cross my fingers!

I did the same last year, though a 300 which has more NMEA connections. It is very mucg a matter of choosing your mounting position and connecting up. The only problem is that you do not connect the same colour wires between the radio and plotter. Once you get your head round that it is quite easy and mine worked first time. I now have the RAM mike connected and that is very good.
