Interesting question for people into electrics.

How can i wire up my no charge light when after replacing my voltage regulator (which quit after years of use) when strangely enough now; between by alternator and regulator there is no wire which changes polarity as the engine is started and alternator starts pumping out ?

Completly baffled. Any help ?

Regards
Tyrone.

Now, "Depending on your set-up", its not so much a polarity change as an equalisation of volts.

If you connect one side of a lamp to 12V and the other to 0V the difference will cause current to flow and light the lamp.

When the alternator isn't charging you get 0V, when charging, you get 12V (more actually), so no "appreciable" current flow, no light from the lamp.

The wiring to the charging light doesn't change polarity, one end goes to 12V normally via ign. switch and the other goes to the o/p of the regulator on the alternator, this point is ground (or near it) with the alternator (engine) not running and 12Voltish with the alternator giving an output (engine running) Hence ignition on, engine stopped equals light on and ign on engine running light off.

your ign warning light should not be affected if you change your regulator.
it is wired direct from an alternator o/p (which is at 0 volt when engine stopped)via switch to battery pos.when engine running if o/p is ok the votage will be equal and light goes out.

The charge light should be connected to D+ on the alternator which goes to earth through the alternator, when its running and generating a charge it effectively cancels out this earth and your light goes out
