Wiring and jumper settings for 90\'s style VDO Sumlog SL

I have an old but working VDO Sumlog SL Electronic speedo with the rolling numerical log as opposed to the newer digital log.

Can anyone help me with a manual or some sort of info on this - thanks!

I don't know of any jumpers in the wiring. Youw ill find there are 2 wires +ve and -ve for 12v power and 2 wires to the impeller one of which may be earth (Screen of the cable) It should be fairly simple to wire up at home. You should bhe able to get 10knots by blowing on the impeller to spin as fast as possible.

Having said all that I had an old Smiths log similar to yours. While it worked OK the paddle was always fouled with crustaceans. I ended up leaving it out only fitting for actual sailing. With attendant water ingress when changing from blank plug to paddle wheel. I ended up removing and filling in the hole. Warm water here makes the weed and crustaceans grow fast.

So now I use GPS and I wou8ld not recommend you cut a hole in the hull for you Sumlog. Perhaps mount it on a bracket at the transom.

good luck olewill

Many thanks for your comment - the Sumlog is actually fitted and working - just wondered what the jumper switches on the back would do! - also planning to move the guage so was curious about the 5-6 wires fitted to it!! - I guess a little more studying will work it out.
Thanks for the recommendation about the crustaceans! - we are planning to head off on a circum next year so will probably end up relying on the GPS log anyway!

Speed reading is calibrated by the switches on the back. Have the instructions on the boat. (from memory it is set in binary 1,2,4,8 %)
The wires of the paddle wheel transducer are:White Plus, Brown Minus, Green Puls.

I found some more info on the web (sorry I dont speak finnish either):
Med dip-switchen (6) kalibreras loggen i 32 (2 upphöjt i 5) steg med 2% skillnad i varje steg enligt följande (räkna binärt upp till 31, 0 = switchen off, 1 = switchen on):
-20 % vid 0 (0 0 0 0 0)
-18 % vid 1 (0 0 0 0 1)
-16% vid 2 (0 0 0 1 0)
...
0 vid 10 (0 1 0 1 0) Factory setting
...
+42 % vid 31 (1 1 1 1 1)
