Can anyone be of assitance pls: i need to connect a Simrad handeld VHF DSC to the 12V inboard system through its charging craddle:

1- can i connect it directly to the batteries?
2- can i connecte it to the swithpanel knob that switheces on/off the fixed VHF already fitted in
3- do i need a fuse, and if so, which one?
4- assuming that i manage to solve the problems above, how do i connect to the NMEA port of my Garmin 128 GPS, since such port is already feeding the reapeters in the cockpit and, do i need a special cable for such NMEA connection?

Thanks so much to anybody that could steer a hopeless "non-electric" to solve some elmentary problems;

No I'd suggest a plug and socket near the location of the radio so it can be moved.
Socket goes on the battery side incidentally.

Yes you could but see 1 above and it would need its own fuse in line to protect it.
Also doesn't give any redundancy in the event of supply failure to the main set. EG Where is your backup!

3- do i need a fuse, and if so, which one?
Yes you do need a fuse, sizig is driven by cable size as much as anything but I'd suggest a 5Amp(max) in a waterproof in-line holder.

Should if the Garmins got enough output be able to connect it straight to the HH, but A. it's yet another connector and B. I'd suggest getting the HH working on its own to the Garmin the reconnecting the other bits.
