Wiring a gps1240 Help anyone assist me.??

Hi all im currently trying to wire up a navman gps1240 receiver to my new navman vhf 7100
i know it can be done with a different receiver see here:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Marine-GPS-receive...A1%7C240%3A1318

this is the pinout's i have for both items
first the navman GPS1240
pin 1 ground
pin 2 power input 7 to 32 volts dc
pin 3 not used
pin 4 NMEA data in (rs232)
pin 5 not used
pin 6 NMEA data out (rs232)
pin 7 not used
pin 8 not used.

and the navman vhf 7100
pin 1 red not used
pin 2 orange NMEA out + not used
pin 3 white program or clone select not used
pin 4 yellow NMEA IN + from GPS
pin 5 green NMEA IN - from GPS
pin 6 black NMEA out - ground not used
pin 7 blue navbus not used on 7000 or 7100
pin 8 grey navbus not used on 7000 or 7100
........the radio already has 12volts going into it and it's powered up this is just the extra connector to input the GPS data in and out( i think?)

here is the site telling you the data for the GPS1240 navman

Re: Wiring a gps1240 Help anyone assist me.??

No replies yet?? my 0.02p:

Pin 6 on GPS (NMEA out) to pin 4 on VHF (NMEA + in)
Pin 1 on GPS (Ground) to pin 5 on VHF (NMEA - in)

You're looking for an NMEA signal *out* of the GPS and *in* to the VHF

Some things have NMEA + and NMEA -, but some things just have NMEA + and a ground.

FWIW, I would still run a cable from pin 5 of the VHF to 1 on the GPS, even though just connecting it (pin 5) to ground is electrically the same.

again FWIW, I would use screened, twisted pair wire for the connection, with the screen connected to ground at the GPS end only (no connection at the VHF end) - CatIV computer network cable works for me, however it is almost guaranteed to work perfectly well just using normal wire.

It's always quiet on the weekends. Wait until they are all back at their office desks next week with nothing to do

Based on the wiring colours you've quoted, you need to connect as follows:-

* 1240 Black to 12v negative
* 1240 Red to 12v positive
* 1240 Green to 7100 Yellow

This should work OK if you're feeding the 7100 and the 1240 from the same 12v source. If it doesn't work, you may need also to connect 7100 Green to 12v negative.
