I am currently looking at installing a wireless PIR (passive motion infrared) monitor in the wheelhouse (motorsailer) which has a back removable cover over it when the boat is left).

My understanding is if someone 'enters the field of the infrared' when set it then will set the alarm off, BUT, yes of course the boat is moving even on her pontoon berth, but, even if the boat itself on the berth is moving nothing is actually crossing the infrared field so 'I assume' it will not set the alarm off, or will it!!.

Anyone got one or a similair set up, detector range max 6', if not what is suggested as I am no electrical expert!:D

I'm sure when we were putting such sensors in my parents' house years ago, the instructions said not to position them facing a window. So they are all in corners of the wall with the window, facing into the room. Sounds like it would be difficult to arrange in a wheelhouse, where I assume you can see out all round.

It will depend on the quality of the sensor. Decent sensors can filter alarms, or the intruder has to pass through more than one "sensitive "field of view. Some sensors have a double knock switch or jumper so before the sensor will transmit an alarm to the control panel, so it has to "see" more than one alarm within in a given time frame say 20 seconds.
Not sure if you can get a dual tec sensor which is wireless as they use up too much power.

Check Visonic for their wireless equipment. In particular the powermax express kit. It comes with 2 PIR sensors and a wireless door contact. It also has a GSM communicator built in so it will send an SMS as to what zone has caused the alarm. Very reliable kit

Hi Pete

Yes I did think of that and planned to put it looking across (port/starboard) on the side low down so the sensor would be looking at the other solid side, plus you would not see it until it was to late and it goes off.

Pretty much what I did. The PIR is actually hidden from view but aims across the centreline and is about knee level. It didn't seem to go off unless someone actually tramped around the boat. I seem to remember trying different internal switch settings to get a compromise between extremely sensitive and sensitive enough to be useful.

PIRs are sensitive to sudden changes in heat such as sun appearing from behind cloud. Also movement of articles hanging on pegs under the influence of a passing wash may cause activation. For these reasons, I would recommend a microwave detector which instead of a single bulb-like detection area sends out many separate linear detection beams. Detection occurs when two or more are compromised (or set it to your own circumstances (3 or more for a domestic pet etc).
Next you have to think about the signalling device and response. Your mobile phone or a local sounder? Video camera or poisonous gas release? :)

Hi Seatrout

Love your idea of gassing any intruders but it will take to long, so may rig up to just electrocute them instead, far quicker :)

I thought (maybe wrongly) you need to actually break the infrared beam by say walking into it to activate the sensor, so any other activation or vibration would not set it off, hence my question as to what others have done!

Being up the north east coast we do not get many sudden changes in heat :D but hear where you are coming from, where did you get a microwave detector from Maplins??
