Wireless Remote for Lewmar Windlass

Should do the job. I fitted one to my Quick windlass a couple of years back and it's still working.
Main criticism is that the hand-held remote is not very weatherproof despite the claims.

I also fitted one to my windlass this year and its worked fine. As another comment said it is not weatherproof but then you can keep it in your pocket if it's raining!

Fitted to a Lofrans several years ago. Been fine - just had to replace the battery.
Can't say I've had any weatherproofing issues - but I try and keep it dryish.

Only issue I have had is it tripped the fuse if both buttons are accidentally pressed together - but as I have a trip its an inconvenience - and I only did it once !

.

I fitted the same remote and it works fine with a Lofrans Tigres (which has no idea how it is being supplied with power so doesn't care) and a contactor from winch-It in Ringwood.

Can I suggest that you add a simple parallel manual switch box? These are cheaply available and could be left in the chain locker, tied up away from the chain fall. I have no reason to suspect the reliablity of the radio remotes but if something does fail, you'll have the manual backup.

I too fitted one to my Vetus winch a few years ago. It has worked well and I'm satisfied - once one anticipates the very slight delay in stopping.

But I do wonder what the danger is in a crowded anchorage that one's anchor winch could be activated by someone else with a similar unit - could be embarrassing.

The units are supplied with various frequencies, the relay has to be matched to the remote control, so the possibility of interference is reduced.
Also the claimed range is fairly short, 50ft. IIRC.
In addition, when I'm anchored, I normally switch off the windlass breaker, so, altogether, the chance of a problem is tiny.

It's human nature to leave on default. Or, with my luck, choose one that my neighbour has also chosen.

Ah, you've never been in an anchorage with Italian neighbours, I presume. One can be alone in a large enough anchorage but they'll make a bee-line to anchor right next to you.

I don't easily have that choice - another job for fitting-out.

I fitted the same remote in September and it works fine I also have a cable remote that i keep in the forepeak and pass it out through the hatch when I will be needing it so when I go forward its there waiting but the remote means I can lower the anchor from behind the wheel
and recover it from the wheel which would be great in a crowded anchorage like Falmouth harbour, but I have a problem with my chain piling up in the chain locker and jamming the windlass when I am up forward I can push the chain forward with the manual handle which is ok but once the anchor is out the boat is off on its own.
PS I mostly sail on my own.

Think the slight time lag is the winch ramping down, the remote is pretty much instant.

From the ebay listing earlier in the thread.....

Each remote is uniquely coded to the transmitter to ensure there is no possibility of interference from other transmitters.

Wireless Remote for Windlass - Help!

I've wired the remote and it doesn't work. Worse the windlass won't work on the Lewmar pendant controller either. The contactor clicks once but that's it.
While wiring i stupidly managed to spark across the terminals- could this be the cause of the problem. Measuring the voltage at the terminals it's only about 0.5v, so possibly i've blown the 100amp fuse?
The wiring diag shows a 100a fuse but so far i've not been able to locate it. Anyone know where it will be on a Bav 39?

Any advice appreciated.

John

I've found the fuse behind saloon seat cushions. It's 63A, which i've replaced with a 125A spare i have aboard. The wireless remote works well- horray!
Nigel Calder suggests 300A as a minimum fuse, so i'm wondering if i should upgrade?
Lewmar recommend a 70A Circuit Breaker, which suggests Calder may be out of date??
Can anyone suggest a good resettable slow blow Circuit Breaker 70-100A?

John

If Lewmar say 70A then so long as the cables are rated above that then 70A it should be... 300A would have me worried about cooking the cables!

Sorry - can't help on the circuit breaker ..
