Just wondering if anyone has had any success with the wireless networks operating at Premier marinas? I have tried to hook up at Gosport and Falmouth without success. makes me think its probably something that I'm doing incorrectly, but you never know!

What have you tried so far? Are you seeing any reception in the wifi driver software on the pc?

Tried a laptop with centrino, and now a PDA, but cant seem to pick up the network on either. The PDA works everywhere else though, so I suspect a conflict somewhere with the marina network.Thought of getting a couple of tin cans and some string as backup.

Experience with 208.11b, pci and pcmia cards tells me that you seem to be out of range. Mine are all Intel now, (so others will probably be different) and show radio activity, whether connected or not, once the correct channel has been selected. Have you asked it to scan, and/or, have you been told which channel to use?

Your tin cans suggestion is not so daft. Various websites tell you how to use a Pringles tube to improve directional reception/transmission. Not much use with Centrino though. Have you tried an external USB unit? Tried some Belkin ones a while back, but they weren't actually as good as pci/pcmia cards in a brick built house.

I connect to the wireless network at Gosport fairly regularly both with a notebook + external USB wireless adapter and with a PDA with builtin WiFi capability. I am not especially impressed with the service in that you need to keep the connection active else it times out and that there are long pauses in the connection that can cause some software to time out. For plain web browsing it seems OK though.

If you are in Gosport this weekend then I would be happy to demo it.

Thanks for the info. We are now based at falmouth so I will try to get some assistance there.
My PDA is wifi compliant as well. Perhaps I just needed to switch it on or something. Who knows. I will have another go and let you know.
