Wireless interface between tablets,smart phones and nmea

After some years putting together a wired laptop onboard navigation system having recently aquired a Smart Phone and then a Hudl tablet its all feeling rather outdated as I can just about do everything on the Smart phone and Hudl other than AIS-there are AIS apps which can interpret the data once sent out wirelessly but are there any wireless devices capable of translating an incoming com port or USB port signal into the necessary wireless signal for the tablet to communicate with?
