Hi,
I need to make some stays and have splices put on them. I was wondering if they could be done for a cheap price, i looked at the jimmy green website and did the DIY thing and they came out rather expensive £30 a set I need 8 sets. i would like to pay half that if possible, or is there anyone company can do the splices i can get the wire i'd be willing to pay £30 for 16 splices, was thinking Des pawson.
I live in the south suffolk so not too far from there.
thanks jack

galvanised plough steel?

Galvanised plough steel wire used to be very much cheaper than stainless steel. You could hand splice it too. A coat of boiled linseed oil used to keep the corrosion at bay - and it didn't need to be replaced periodically like s/s! I used it on my Folkdancer 26 (alloy mast) and on a 8T Hilliard. I wonder if you can still get it?

To hand splice say, 8mm 7x7 galvanised, and if you're making stays I imagine you'll want them cut to length and thimbles turned in properly, would be best part of a days work, at least for me it would and I do a fair bit of hand splicing so I'm not too slow with a spike. I think you'll be lucky to get 16 done for 30 quid, Jack.

What size?
Ormiston wire splice tool does up to 4mm or is it 5mm?
About £30 from dinghy chandlers online, eg Trident or Sailboats.co.uk

If it needs to be stronger than that, I would not be economising.

Would spectra or Vectran be appropriate? very easy to DIY splice.
