Tinned wire...

You can get tinned 3-core wire from Index Marine - they call it "shipwiring cable".

For your 10W bulb, you'd need to use 1.5sq mm conductors in order to keep the voltage drop below 0.5v. Are you sure it's only a 10W bulb? Your boat's around the size where many people would have a 25W in the tricolour.

As chas says try RS - they do a tinned copper stranded wire, up to 1.0mm², at a price of £9.16/100metres + VAT(for 1.0mm²). All in several colours. The RS no is 356-729 for black. Called "Equipment wire to BS 4808 Part 2. Other sorts available at varying prices.

Re: Wire for mast head light? - 3 core tinned-

Just reread your post - 3 core available from RS - BS6500 Table 6 Rubber covered - 1.5mm² at £78.55/100m or Textile covered at £57.29/100m. Try also your local Electrical Distributor who might have some in stock and at a better price.

What sort of fitting do you have? I've been looking for a combined tricolour and anchor light, but the only one I've found is the Aquasignal which has a 25W blub for the tricolour, which gives little saving over the side/stern lights (3x10W).

I have found a tricolour with a 10W bulb, but not a combined unit.

I'm doing the same job and had a question regarding the actual hole through the mast.

Is there any product available to seal the hole through which mast wires run ? That is some sort of gland through which the mast cables enter the actual mast ?

Thanks in advance,.
Tyrone.

A decent grommet should seal the hole, if this feels not enough I am sure a grommet and sealant should work fine too.
