Hello,

i am trying to remove the complete wiper arm on my Fairline 41/43 Flybridge. It seems the end "caps" , (the cover you normally lift up to reveal the nut which you undo to remove the complete arm from the spline), are completely rusted on. i have tried all potions to make the caps lose, but no joy. Can anyone shed some light on how these are normally removed? is there any additional locking mechanisms or release pins that i need to be aware of. My next option is to grind them off. I am very nervous about damaging the windows

Very much appreciate any ideas or wisdom!

thanks

I suspect that you'll have to cut the covers off, but when you do make sure that you protect the whole area from iron filings! You can then use a wiper arm puller as I doubt you'll get the arms off the splines without one.

Thanks, my only concern and I will need to check, is that there is a flybridge overhang over the windscreen wiper spline area. Just need to check I have sufficient room to get a puller in there.
Appreciate the thought and quick response though

cheers

You would think there is a better way to connect wipers to spindles in this day and age. Cars are the same once they get corroded on. I would suggest having a multitool or dremel in the tool box to do this type of cutting job. A puller needs to be right size to work and is good for one job whereas multitool will work on many fiddly cutting jobs where normal tools will not.

I’ve already done that with a dremel and removed half the cap, now stuck with the remainder of the cap (the bit that has the nut underneath l) on the spindle. Worried re damaging the spindle. So frustrating!!

We have the same problem but ours have a grub screw holding them on, which just won’t shift. I suspect that the arms are corroded to the spindle and with an overhang above the windscreens I am not sure that a puller will be an option. Just one of many jobs on the list for our mini-refit over the winter!

Do not grind anything on a GRP boat.

You will never get rid of the rust spots on the matter what you do. Trust me I know from experience when one of our survey teams decided that they were going to start grinding whilst I was off the boat, three years at least later when I left to come back here the rust spots were still reappearing.
