wintering in south Italy

Does anyone have any advice as to where might be a good place to winter in Southern Italy/Sicily. Cost is obviously an issue, but as my wife will probably spend some time alone there while I work, so is security both from the elements and also personal.

Frankly I'd use Corfu or Malta if you're going to be away a lot
and your wife wants some english speaking company.
