Decisions - decisions - advice sought on wintering locations , we may hit portugal in time or still be in northern spain for winter , all personal experiences and advice gratefully received

We would prefer power and on a pontoon and not in a city center , all options please ?

Hello Ian

I can recommend Nazaré Portugal, the marina is cheap and cheerful and run by Mike an eccentric Englishman, or it was I was last there. No discos, bright lights or parties, just a typical Portuguese fishing harbour without all the flash things you find in upmarket marinas.

39° 35.748'N 0009° 3.970'W

Sandyman over wintered there last year and will have the latest details. You should be able to get your 50 foot (t)Rusty dinghy in there OK

Hiya david

Yes i had considered nazaire , sandy sends me his email blog, ill drop him a line.

You still in gosport ?.... Baking down here

Where are you at the moment?
If you are still plodding along the N coast of Spain, I thoroughly recommend Aviles.
Water and electric but nout else, 2mls up a channel so safe from sea winds, 20min €4 Bus ride from Airport, cheap, lovely town, what more could a chap ask for?

How do you like your weather?

Portuguese Silver Coast can be wet, cold & very wind in winter so if you want milder, sunny weather you need to consider rounding Vincent to The Algarve & beyond. Close to Gib (beyond Cadiz) the Lavant can again make life 'interesting'.

There are a number of places to stop but you can sail the whole of the Algarve & on to Cadiz in 3 to or 4 shortish day hops to select the place you like the most.

We winter in Lagos & you can find tons of detail on www.lagosnavigators.net but from your description Portimao or Ayamonte could be more suitable.

The attraction of Ayamonte is it is a small Spanish town just over the boarder, with the marina separated from the town by a river & you can sail Spain & Portugal through out the winter plus having 20 or so miles of the Rio Guadiana to explore.

Portimao Marina is about 2 miles from the city at the entrance to the Rio Ararde -but can be lumpy in an easterly/westerly blow.

Lagos Marina is also separated from the city by the Rio Bensifrim. Loved by many but not all.

Whatever your choice, safe trip down the West Coast & hope you have a super winter.

Let us all know how you get on.

Interesting how we see different places. We had two days in Nazare and you could not pay me enough money to stay there overwinter, two days was like a custodial sentence.

The winter weather is quite nice on the Algarve in the south Portugal( I spent two winters there). The proplem is that the coastal stip has been wrecked with honky-tonk tourist development. Cheap nasty bucket and spade development.

West of Faro gets twice the winter rainfall.....and Tavira is the only genuine Portuguese town to the East. Very nice town with old buildings, miles and miles of sandy beaches strecthing along the coast to the east. The Ria formosa is an 'intercoastal' system of sand dunes running from Faro eastwards.........

Fantastic fantastic stretch of coast, Tavira bring the gem ( all the other towns to the east are horrid).
Lots of places to anchor-out inside the Ria formsa, or there are a small amount of pontoons on the river in and around Tavira, and up to the west and east on the Ria formosa.

Have a look on google earth.....

Highly recommended.
