time is fleeting as they say & it looks like I need to start thing about
winter storage. would like to hear from anyone who has wintered/store a boat in Roanne.
Also, anyone know any places on the canal du center or lateral a la loire that provide long term moorings?
thanks in advance

Get yourself to Lyon and winter on the quay on the Saone.
Maybe I'm overly pessimistic, but leaving a boat unattended on a Lyon quay for a while is not recommended by me. Leaving one over the winter? Non!
If Cimo is on the C du Centre, then StJdL is the obvious place not far away, but there are a number of others. Briare has a winter liveaboard community, for example. Check out my site (I know you have ;) ) and ask around on the ground.

quite right. let me rephrase the op.

coming to the end of a brief liveabord period. So, going to be an abandoner again soon in order to gather some green stuff (oh to be retired!).

Considering Roanne because its close to me and its advertised as being cheap. (whatever cheap is?). was hoping to hear from anyone who has been there.

also would be gratefull for info on any places on the canal du center or lateral a la loire that provide long term moorings?

at the risk of answering myself - stopped in Montceau Les Mines (midway C du centre) today. The PdP here is advertising 1 year pontoon berths for E300 (yes 300 euros) for 6-10meters. Appears to be alot of berths available. Quite a few fellow abandoners here too from first impressions. All ammenities within a stones throw (no lift out at the pdp though) - "an excellent base to further explore the canals". So, what am I missing?

Did enjoy my few days in Lyon, but must say, didn't fancy the free berthing along the quays - security aside - the commercial wash would be tough on an 8.5 meter boat. Besides the boat is pointing north now!

so -
Anyone been in Roanne lately?
Anyone know any other long stay spots on canal du center or lateral a la loire.

thanks & rgds

Roanne may be cheap - BUT- it has also suffered from two serious breaches in the last 4/5 years. I would never risk going there again, in case another breach occured. To be unable to move your boat for a few months until a breach is repaired - if repaired! Could be very unpleasant. Also I was told (??? ) that as the Canal Roanne - Digoin is owned by local councils, there was some argument as to who paid for repairs.
There are quite few small ports nearer Challon, many of which seemed to have space when I was there last, certainly worth the drive to have a look.

I spoke [phone] to Roanne 2 months ago and they were "full".

seems to be the trend. Enquired in the office at Montceau Les Mines this morning (closed yesterday). c'est complete aussi. they suggested I write a letter and send it around next march for a 2012 wintering!

thanks for sharing your experience. by challon - do you mean chalon sur saone? (it's my first time passing through).

Tied up at Genelard mooring station for the night. I see two abandoners along the quay here. (The cobwebs are a dead giveaway). May have to do the same myself should this trend continue!

Yes - Sorry! - Chalon sur Saone .
Have a look at St Julian and St.Leger - both sur le Dheune may be worth a look. Also the very small village of & Fragnes is spending a bit of money, all of them are very easy to get at from the road - Montceau les Mines to Chalon.
But remember winters in Central France can be VERY cold -9° quite normal, so wherever you leave her be very sure there is no water that can freeze.

recently passed all those places you mentioned above. A proper engine winterisation on the to do list for this year. Also considering a lift out and winter ashore now, with perhaps a bit of hull maintance next spring - due a lift out anyway - its been over two years. making leisurly progress north and still searching. Will post any findings.

Yes they do flood to a greater or lesser extent. The calm (in summer) Saone gets a lot more 'exciting'. Yes, tree trunks and branches (logodiles) of a considerable size come downstream at a rate of knots and one would not want to get clouted. And yes, there are some ports tucked off the main channel that are safe - for example PK112 Valensol at Valence on the Rhone.

Hello

Chalon-sur-Saone seemed a nice place, when we where there about a week ago. Further upstream of Saone, there is St-Jean-de-Losne. Met at least two boats, who were leaving their boats at that marina.

If I would need to leave a boat here, I would leave it in Valence. A lot of British boats there, some liveaboards and some on long term mooring I would think.

to whom it may concern...............

& for anyone following this thread - The brand new P.de Plaisance at Decize (K67, C. lateral a la Loire) have loads of room (just opened apparently). Nice town & great staff. No facilities for wintering ashore. The local LeBoat outfit also operate from the basin & have a 10T static crane.

1250 euro per year (8 to 12meters).
