Core plug heaters work well in simple cooling systems but most boat engines have extra excangers etc that wont be protected without circulation. Better to heat the engine enclosure with greenhouse type space heater. I believe that if you look at the Saab car system it actually fits in the radiator.

240 volts heaters are available for Land rovers, worth talking to the local Land Rrover dealer. One of my friends has fitted one to his Defender so i will get name and address of supplier this weekend and send on the details.

We have fitted a 240 volt heater to our V12 800 HP Rolls Royce Diesel Generator. If we try and start the engine without having the water heater working the engine takes longer to start and is unstable for about 2 mins. Also emits huge quantities of black smoke so they are worth fitting.

Dont think 12 or 24 volts is an option as the power is in the order of a couple of hundred wattts so you would soon drain your battery. You should still ensure that antifreeze is topped up and not rely on the heater to protect your engine from frost as the heater can trip out.
