Villagarcia should be OK. Well sheltered up the Ria. Good rail links to Santiago de Compostela (Ryanair I think). Noisy waterside discos (midnight to 8 am) can be a nuisance. La Coruna is worth a look, plenty to see, lively town, good liveaboard community. Portosin, also in the Rias might be another choice, excellent Club Nautico, town a bit charmless.
Aside from the ones mentioned already, other possibilities are: Camarinas and Ares. The first one is in the Ria de Camarinas y Muxia and has a marina. Ares is situated on the N-shore of the Ria de Betanzos y Ares and also has a marina. I find Ares less formal than Sada, which is in the same ria, but on the W-shore. As far as I know, Ares is cheaper than Sada, because it is a marina of the Galician Xunta, while Sada is privately owned. In both you probably can have the ship ashore during the winter.
It is important to know what your intentions are: Leaving the ship and going back to the UK or planning to live on-board for part of the winter. In the last case I would always chose Coruna, but am probably partial, because I lived there for a number of years and know my way around. Advantage of Coruna are the large number of chandlers, which work mainly for the fishermen and whose prices are not as ridiculously high as in the chandlers , which work for the yachtsmen. There is also a shop specialised in fasteners, which sells stainless parts as well. If you know your way, Coruna can be cheap to live as well as to eat out every now and then.
Agree with Waagenar if you're living afloat. A coruna is a great place with good yacht maintence facilities. If you're pulling out or leaving the boat, check my website for choices.
La Coruna is a great place to stop - right in middle of a great town with all facilities for both you and the boat. Plus a nearby airport. Captainslarty must still be in dock himself as he's about to have his second liveaboard winter there and would otherwise have told you all about it.
Hi , no I am back lol.. just limited email at the mo...
La Coruna is excellent, as said, our second winter here.. drop me a mail to captainslarty (AT) yahoo.co.uk - remove the (AT)... and I can answer any questions.. Sada is great in the summer, out on a limb in the winter..
