I will be liveing aboard between Aigues Mortes & Sète from about August this year i want to stay around there until about July 09

Its been many years since i spent even a few winter weeks in that area.Is/was there anyone there last summer??What were the mosquitoes like? In winter do they go completely??

Can i anchor? where i anchor tie up around the Etang? Is the canal Philippe lamour for pleasure craft, commercial or abandond??

Where can i tie up anchor not to far from cafès and without economic hardship? If anywhere.I was last there on my own boat many years ago, since then ive helped bring a couple of boats down and found places that were free are now restricted in number and expensive!

I will be going along there before sadly i first have to drive to the Baltic to collect what hasent been stolen then ive work to do on a boat,my "tickets to wealth" are severely limited makeing visits before uncertain,so advice needed!!

Sailing from Toulon even in summer can force me in to economicaly unsupportable ports due to the mistral, or enjoy?? a quick retern to toulon & security!

ADVICE SORT on staying in the Camargue to Sète area summer & winter

Re: Winter between ag mortes&Sète until July09 where to anchor?Mosquitoes?

Spent a winter between Arles and Touluse, I don,t think we were charged anywhere, maybe just lucky! The mossies were no prob in the winter, the flamingos were strutting about on the ice at times! Bill.

Never saw people anchored in the Etang de Thau but that is not to say it is not allowed. There was a spot near the entrance to the Midi at the western end of the Etang that a couple with young kids tied up for the winter for free. Its a reasonable walk from there to Marseillan which has everything in the way of shops etc.In Sete itself you can go alongside the Mistral Quai (first on the left before the first bridge just as you leave the Etang) It is quite choppy with wash and swell when the wind is against the flow off the Etang but there is water there and a bar.It is within easy walk of shops.Go under the first bridge and turn left and there were a few liveaboards moored there. We were told that it was free round there and there is water but no access to electric which we needed so we went to Marseillan marina. This was in 2004 FWIW.Not bothered by mossies in that area from Sep '04 to April 2005 when we moved on.

AiguesMortes-Sete

The Etang is of course shallow and can get quite a chop on, but no worse than at sea I guess. I can't think of an obvious reason why one couldn't anchor there.
The first kilometre of the Midi has a number of 'elderly' boats tied alongside - presumably for free?. There is a Glenans sailing school right at the Etang-Midi entrance that offers cheap moorings with electricity and water, maybe it closes during the winter and so the mooring is free and the electricity not too expensive?
Sete is a great place but by golly those small shell-fishing boats create enormous wakes as they plough past fast!
Between Sete and A-M there are various places to tie alongside, for example at La Magulonne (spelling probably a bit off) where there is a pleasant walk to the nearest village about 10 minutes inland. And a naturist beach, although probably not during the winter . . . /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
I recall that there is a simple timber jetty near Aigues Mortes, on the way towards Sete, near where the 'last' (western) channel from A-M joins the main Rhone-a-Sete canal. (well, there was in 2004!) That might be free or pretty cheap and not too far to walk into A-M.
The mozzies are a nuisance, but not half as bad as around Port Napoleon.

That sounds great!

I know sète form a long time ago.Ill note everything as i might not be able to get there before im staying there!!??Its a very long way from Toulon by landrover! And quite a long sail even one way!

The Etang is shallow i dont know how shallow? That was a question ill find out perhaps when i get there.

What im afraid of are restrictions on mooring i hope its not becoming over restricted.Already sounding promising!

I agree with all of the above.

You will need something from the VNF in the area to keep them happy.

You wil have no problem mooring for free within walking distance of civilisation unless your keel is over a metre when the bank might need a long plank. Lots of lovely places.

You can anchor thougtfully in the Etag if you want.

The mosquitos we not a problem in the summer last year

Anyone got thoughts on Agde on the Herault, looks like plenty of space alongside AND without having to dismast, pictures found on the'net are quite impressive.

Agde is a nice town.Entrance into the Herault is easy.Lots of private swing moorings on the run up to Agde.Don't know about position re moorings up in the town. This might be one for a personal visit. There is an excellent yard at Grau de Agde on the Herault about 3/4 mile in from sea on east bank.Called Sarl Euromarine run by Henri Allemande. If you are stuck they do dry moorings if you give them plenty of notice.

Re: Winter between ag mortes&Sète until July09 where to anchor?Mosquit

There are moorings on the river, but I have never tried to visit them. I would expect someone to claim ownership.

There is a long stretch of the Canal du Midi to the west of the round lock lined with livaboard boats mostly vacant and some sunk. Near the round lock adjacent to a large warehouse is a long quay which if you can get on has a water tap but no power. In the season it is in frequent use by trip boats so not often free except as a water stop. In the winter it may be available and if so it would be a ideal spot and nicely near Agde.

I have always stayed there in the summer but I am a small boat.

Opposite is a very busy charter boat yard. Off season they might wish to sell you electricity and a mooring their side.

To get on the DdM here you will have to get the mast down first.

It dosent sound to bad at all!I was afraid it had gone the way many other places have.
I know?all the ports are full along the coast that is i assume its not less full than it was in 1999/2000 when i last asked (by phone mainly)we stopped in Ag Mortes for a few days.

My baltic trips have all but ruined my life! Now more than ever id love to go along for a look than drive to Stockholm!Sailing is almost free drivings expensive!

I could be there in June??But if i get caught in a restricted summer without knowing the area first hand that could be difficult, all the same from whats been said it sounds as if it will turn out to be a pleasant stay.

Hope the global warming stops the mistral along there during winter???

What about wi-fi and open markets?Fish markets?? I hope ill be able to post about this question once i get there
