We would like to leave our boat ashore next winter somewhere secure and reasonably cheap (of course) in the Bordeaux/La Rochelle/Gironde area. We might even consider moving up the Gironde into the Canal du Midi if there is somewhere suitable. All recommendations gratefully received! Many thanks, Bob

MichaelE/Bambola would probably be your man for La Rochelle area (http://www.ybw.com/forums/member.php?u=9021). So far as inland/the canals are concerned (Canal de Garonne, not Canal du Midi) there is a PdP (port de plaisance) just outside Bordeaux on the Garonne and you might consider trying Castets (first place on the Canal de Garonne). My books and guides are on the boat, and I'm not, so can't give you more precise info. than that. Lots of places are already booked up for the coming Winter.

You could try Rochefort, just down the coast and river from La Rochelle. Not ideal as they have to hire a crane in, but there is reasonable hotel with a good restaurant nearby!

ashore near Bordeaux winter.

Sorry rushing this a bit as my net credit is nearly out! Why not some of the yards at Les Minimes on the way in to the inner harb of La Rochelle. loads of yards.Have no names as yet.
Might work out? good sailing

Depends if you want to sail the boat over winter or have her out of the water.

I'd suggest concentrating on the la Rochelle area - far more berths available round there than the Gironde/Bordeaux area.

The cheapest alongside winter berth I've ever had, in one of the most friendly places I've ever been was at Marans, up the Sevre-Niortaise. Cost £25/month equivalent and I played my last game of Rugby there for their Veterans - training every Thursday involved at least 1 bottle of wine per trainee.

Les Rochellais have difficulty in forgiving the English for the incompetence of Buckingham in not saving them from the French!!

Don't know Bordeaux at all, apart from the red stuff that is but do live half an hour from La Rochelle, have kept boats there, at Rochefort, Sables & Port Bourgenay. No berths available anywhere during the saeson but all of which would probably have winter berths as people come out for winter. In this case Rochefort is by far the cheapest but best to book in advance I think.

In terms of coming out there is very little space to store boats ashore anywhere so again best to book in advance BUT I can tell you that La Rochelle is HORRENDOUSLY expensive to lift in & out. We use Polypat at Port Bourgenay (we're going back into the water tomorrow in fact) and it costs just €150 - about half LR I believe.

If we can be of any further help, just shout.

Have a look at Port Medoc, on the Gironde, opposite and a mile or so further in from Royan. When we called in four years ago, it had only just opened but had good facilities.

Pauillac

We'd recommend the port at Pauillac on the Gironde. Very nice and competent people - M. Crouezal is the boss. Quite a pleasant little town although it has seen better days - a major (Grand Cru) wine producing area. Trains to Bordeaux, and a good setting off point if you're planning to go into the Canal du Midi next year. Very good prices for a sec storage, liftout etc. when we were there, winter 07/8. October to June was 765 euros for a 28 footer.
