Winlass on a Bav 33

Afternoon guys,

I wonder if anyone has a photo of a winlass fitted into the locker on a Bav 33 or simillar which they are able to share with me. I wish I'd opted for one when new but I think it was about ten times what I was willing to pay at the time.

Don't have a photo immediately to hand, but when the windlass is factory fitted it is on a plinth at the back of the locker. I think on the 33 they omitted the plinth if you did not have the factory fit. If yours is like that, you will have to build a plinth strong enough to take the windlass. My 37 has a Lofrans Cayman horizontal axis, but I have seen vertical axis models on newer boats, perhaps because they take up less room fore and aft and vertically (except that the motor is underneath the plinth).

There is a good article in PBO this month on fitting a windlass which will give you ideas of what is involved and costs. You will then kick yourself even more for not having it from new as you are into about £14-1500 just for the windlass and electrical supply, rather than the £900 as an option!

Not the same yot, but at 33' the Elan 333 was probably similar and he Genius 500 horizontal axis seems fine. The point of the post though is to confess that I nearly bought loads of incredibly heavy cabling before I realised the boat wiring already included all the leads needed from 3rd battery box to control panel and on to the anchor locker. This saved not only the cable cost but the very real struggle to thread the wiring along the boat. See if yours has the same.

Just a thought but on my Bav the plinth makes it a very tricky operation trying to get the anchor into the locker.

Now of course most of the time it sits on the roller but occassions such as round the island mean lots of swearing as it gets threaded into and later, out of the locker.

Worth doing some measuring
