Some of us are thinking of a Grenadines holiday in Feb 2011. Two schools of thought have emerged:

1. Charter from Horizon Yachts, starting and finishing in Grenada.

2. Charter from Sunsail, starting and finishing in St Vincent.

Has anyone had recent experience of either of these two? Is it true that the Sunsail boats are better maintained than the Horizon ones?
All comments welcomed.

Grenada, whilst v nice, is a fair old trek from the Grenadines and you will have to clear out from Grenada and into the St Vincent bit (where most of the Grenadines lie) at Union Island. Whilst not difficult, it will take a few hour of your time each way, which will eat into your hols.
Starting from St Vincent, you have a pretty choppy sail for a few hours before reaching Bequia, which is v popular and has many other Islands nearby. It will be much calmer between the rest of the Grenadines once you are there. A better bet imho. Try not to miss the Tobago Cays if time allows - you will prob need a couple of weeks to get it all in, if you include stops. You could easily spend a season there!

I'm not sure, but I think there was a Moorings/Sunsail base in Canouan, which is in the chain itels, although I guess it would cost more to get there with transfers etc.

PM me if you want any more info about places to go etc.

Some friends of ours have chartered from a small Austrian company in St Lucia, Rodney Bay. They went one way to Grenada and paid a not too bad fee for the yacht to be returned. They have had a few visits and found this to be their favourite way to charter, you can visit more places without the hassle of getting back.

Can't remember the name of the company but probably on RB website. Nice people, boats fine, I delivered one of their Cats from there to Croatia for a summer season. Daft, but paid well!!

Hope this helps.

Used Horizon Yacht...

Chartered a Bav 38 out of Grenada for two weeks, 18 months ago. Well maintained yacht, no real problems. We used a "skipper" for a day so we could check out on the move up the west coast on Grenada.

Another option is barefootyachts out of St.Vincent.

Doing it again I'd connect through on a flight to St.Vincent and charter from there. Saves the check out/in/out/in factor moving between Grenada and St.Vicent (costs time and money on a sohrt trip). Also you save at least two half/full days getting up and down the west coast coast of Grenada.
