'Windstopper' clothing

HOW MUCH!

I have an old fisherman's smock, OK it ages me it's in blue not pink I hasten to add, that you can still buy for a tenth of the price! Keeps the wind off.

Had the odd fleece over the years, it is great when new but the thin inner windproof layer breaks down withing a couple of years, leaving you with a fleece that's slightly thinner than you'd like and lets the wind through

Apart from that, anything that's waterproof but not windproof is probably a triumph of marketing over physics!

While I have some musto gear, I'd baulk at the price of that. I look in cycling and golfing shops for that sort of thing as they both need warm, windproof garments that allow free movement and tend to be a fraction of the cost..

Yes it is windproof. But its not as soft a feel as a ordinary fleece. When wet it seems to hold the moisture and so gets heavy. It doesn't dry as quickly as ordinary fleece.

Whoops - have just viewed the item and it isnt the same as ordinary fleece. However, the windproof membrane probably is the same as my windproof fleece!

Crikey, that's a lot of money. Any pertex based softshell jacket or smock will do the job of being lightweight, showerproof and windproof at a much lower cost. Get one with a primaloft fill if you want added warmth. Can't rate my Rab Generator smock highly enough and it's a third the price of that Musto jacket (which is admittedly still a fair amount of cash, but worth it IMHO).

I am a total convert to proper Windstopper fleeces. Once worn would never use another conventional fleece. We have for both sailing and walking - and rarely used anything over it even when winter sailing.

BUT would never spend that sort of money. We searched online - rarely come up but with patience have now purchased a total of three Berghaus Hobart fleeces (2 for SWMBO, 1 for me), paying between £65 and £90 new (some on eBay). A slightly cheaper non Gore alternative was a Tog24.

Anyone haveexperience of the above? Seems like a good idea but I don't know if its effective.

I know that there are several manufacturers who make use of it apart from Musto

Many thanks

I have had a Musto Windstopper fleece for 4 years and am totally addicted to it: warm and absolutely wind-proof. I think I have worn it every day I have sailed.
I have also a windstopper running jacket which is not fleece, but equally windproof and great for running.
So my advice: if you can find a windstopper jacket.for a price that is ok for you, do not hesitate.

+1

Although I try and pay a bit less up to 50 quid? most are shower proof as well. I all but live in mine, if you can find a soft fleece outer one they are magic for general travelling they make great pillows...

Normally last me 2-3 years till are functioning but look terrible...
