At least this one will make usable power. The one in the Bristol channel off Foreland Point is just an experiment and the power gets dumped. Why it couldnt have been brought ashore to power a few houses I dont know.

Thinking of putting a small water driven generator above the waterfall behind the cottage. That's of course a ridiculous idea as the Lake District National Park Authority wouldn't wear it.
I wonder if I could get a Royal dispensation?
Do you think Liz would write to them for me?

I believe it will be on Romney Weir - there is an existing (v old) generator there on the right bank - It has been shut for years. The left channel is the canal and lock. I believe that the new one will be in the main weir itself. (at least that is what I did the environmental survey based on........ ). Found an interesting and rare caddis fly larvae - well away from the new building.

These small hydros are not environmentally benign. They need careful positioning to avoid several nasty problems. Seeing minced fish for miles below the hydro sort of spoils the power for free image!

Wouldn't the impact on fish depend on the arrangements for straining the water (some form of mesh) and the nature of the driven wheel. The sort with a series of half-cups on the circumference would not harm wildlife surely? Or are they too inefficient?

Dont tell them and hide it!! Don they patrol frequently around you? If they find it just say it's always been there, never noticed it.

No they are turbines. Water wheels are so last year /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

bbc give an idea

they seem to have moved to the other side of the weir to the side I worked on. Oh well!

Fish problems are usually solvable - change in flow regimes can be more problematic. These can impact all sorts of things. That is not to say these are good and green - it is just you have to be careful in what you do and where you do it. We have been working on the environmental impact of some very interesting new designs of turbines in NY recently - they look very promising.

[/ QUOTE ] Well in keeping with the "pickled in aspic" conservationism up here water wheels would be ideal.
I haven't got the odd £million hanging around so it may be more of a Roy Cropper enterprise. (That would be Heath Robinson, if you're not a Corrie watcher)
