morning all.

Do we know anyone in these parts who can do alterations to a fixed windscreen?

Ocean Lady has a hard screen but it's square on all sides. This is currently ok because it has a fixed flat top hard canopy. however, I am dong to remove the canopy and replace it with a spray hood and cockpit tent. This means that the side panels will be unsupported.

I'd like to have them cut down into triangles and obviously the frame altered to suit.

Glass then.

Hundreds of narrowboat window places which will modify/remanufacture that frame profile - alloy extrusion.

Why not just add the sprayhood to the top of the current profile?

Had you thought of replacing the aluminium 'windscreen' with a steel one? We had a steel one on our steel yacht and it was great.
Here's a couple of old pics which sort of shows it

Actually, one doesn't but I can't delete it....!!!

As an owner of a wheelhouse boat, think long and hard before you remove a good piece of shelter with the English climate. .. I was going to remove Gladys's and am relieved I didn't.

Why rush into removing the hard top , make a temporary tent to go on the end , see how you get on over winter with it and decide later , the hard top looks like a ideal place for a solar panel to me (from pics) , just my thoughts ..

because anyone over 5' smashes their skulls in everytime they go in or out. not good for a 6'2 person trying to liveaboard...

hmm. good point. We will think on. However, gut instinct is that the shelter is very scant for the inconvenience. It probably looks bigger than it is. It just about covers the companion way and hardly affords any extra shelter in the cockpit itself.

We noticed that when we looked at her but thought a foam edge strip would solve it.

It's amazing how much better the UK summers have been since we bought a yacht with a wheelhouse. Last year everyone said it was terrible, we thought it was lovely ;)

I would definitely second that.
Perhaps remodelling the bit that you have to make it more useful in terms of height and coverage, then add a boom tent/cover and you have an extra space.
More than useful as a liveaboard......

Indeed. That;s what I want to do. Modify what we've got. Keep the windscreen, but remove the flat top canopy that doinks tall people.

All getting a bit academic now as the quotes have started rolling for the works we want done and we can't afford anything non-essential anyway!

I've got no intention of removing mine!

You'll soon learn to avoid banging your head on it

The upside of a perfect location for solar panels, and lots of shelter on foul weather passages far outweights the downsides

I had a look this w/e & i think your correct, its in keeping with the boat as is i think. he will soon learn ;)

Didn't take me long to remember not to stand up inside mine, head and wooden deck connecting is painful and I was even tempted to add a foam lining, then realised it's better to leave standing up to when above deck
