I have leaks between the glass and aluminium surround.
There was an article in one of the boating rags some time ago showing how to cut out the old black mastic seal, mask up and re-seal.
1. Anyone have access to the article (probably MBM or MB&Y)
2. Anyone suggest the best "sealant" to use.
Thanks.

Mike,

I have the same problem so I'm glad you have added this post.
Also I'm getting a wet white gritty paste appearing around the seal. Anyone have any ideas what this is?

White gritty paste sounds like corrosion of the frame being forced up through the gap in the sealant might be worth stripping the worst of them to investigate what is happening

Curses, as I though. Just as well I'm taking them off this weekend and sending them off for refurbishment along with my hatches.
Thanks for the confirmation.

They used half an old hacksaw blade to remove the sealant. Cover one end in rag so you can hold it without cutting your hand.

Would suggest you use masking tape and a good sealant such as sikaflex to replace it. The making tape prevents a real mess being spread all over the frame and glass. Keep lots of kitchen roll and thinners handy to clean up as you go along.

You need a low modulus polyurethene. Houdini Marine Windows supplied me with the correct sealant at a sensible, non-inflated price plus a special tool for fairing it in and lots of help and advice. Give them a ring on 01621 773590 and ask to speak to Charlie. Alternatively, email: charlie@houdini-marine.co.uk

Re: window sealing re Nich39Nige

I had the same 'white paste' round my windows. I rather assumed that it is salt left after the seawater has evapporated. The windows are now out being cleaned before putting back together with sika though another post earlier this year titled "what window sealer" had arbosil used. I am just getting more confused though I WILL NOT USE A CHEAP silicone !

Dealt with this on my Colvic about 5 years ago. In winter layup took out windows and stripped frames off on kitchen table, cleaned out and took the lot to the glazer who refitted in sikaflex (local dealer was Pilkington charged £20 per window and did good job. Refitting - offer up frame and pencil around. Remove frame and masking tape outside pencil area. Treat GRP with sikaflex primer, sikaflex on frame and press in place and bolt up. You now have sikaflex squeezing out everywhere (which is good as shows you have a seal). Immediately peel of maskers which takes away most of sikaflex. Immediately rub down area with sikaflex solvent (this only works on unset sikaflex). This was not as difficult as it sounds and cleaned up very nicely. (got all the primer, goo and cleaner from local Strand glass fibre agent). Hope this helps. Good luck. Nic PM me if I can help more!

Re: window sealing re Nich39Nige

I trust that it is the correct type of Sika and not the deck sealant type as you will have a real problem should they ever leak again, you will never get them apart.

Use neoprene tape. It stays in compression and is much less messy to use. Also much simpler if you have to replace again at some stage. Talk to Salford House Windows near Sevenoaks , Kent. They advertise in the back of PBO and Patrick Cole is extremely helpful.
