A pal has bought a Hardy 24 Fisher which included a S-L Seawolf 12v windlass which had not been installed. A quick test by connection direct to battery ran the motor in 'pay out' direction. If properly installed via 3 way switch will it operate in both directions or is something else needed? Local auto-electricians can't help. Sorry if this is an idiot question.

There is no good reason for it not to work. All you are doing is reversing the polarity on a D.C. Motor. In preference to a 3 way switch, you should use two heavy duty relays to reverse the polarity to the motor. The relays would then only require a light duty 3 position switch to operate them. If you use two buttons, then you would need to wire in a circuit that only allowed one relay to operate at a time.

Hi...no-one else answered so my comment would be, if you'd reversed the battery test connections to the motor, it should have run the other way. If you tried and it didn't , then there must be some internal switchery which stops it doing so, or the thing's kaput. It's a bit strange as my SL winch has a gut-simple contactor-solenoid deal which effectively reverses the battery leads when the appropriate buttons are pushed. No problems. Cheers.....R

you're switching massive currents, maybe 80A steady, double that on startup. best to use a relay rather than direct contact switches.

E.C.Smith can sell you everything you need.

Can't imagine why anyone would manufacture a windlass that only ran the chain out!! They are designed to bring the chain in....and the better models will do both.

I suspect that you have wired it up 'back to front' and if you had switched the leads over it would pull the chain in. So it must be a two way unit.

Talk to EC Smith for the switches you need.
