As a guide, when you press the 'down' button on an electric windlass how much chain get let loose per second? Does two seconds per metre sound a reasonable estimate or does it vary wildly between manufacturers?

Cheers

I suppose the best way would be to put the bow over the marina pontoon and let out some chain while counting to say 5.

Would the warp part feed out more slowly than chain?

(It would be a useful way of knowing how much chain/warp you've let out.)

Good idea, I'd also be able to check the length of chain at the same time, supposed to be 60 metres. Are marinas generally okay letting you run the chain out on to the pontoon?

We have no warp, the chain bolts directly to the boat, the surveyor mentioned that it would be a good idea to have a warp for the last metre or so. I could get that job done at the same time.

Cheers

Much simpler is to put a smaall piece of coloured hosepipe over one of the little spindles at the top of the windlass. As it rotates you can count the revolutions from anywhere on the boat, All you need to know is how much chain is on one revolution. I am lucky my windlass is one foot per revolution.

Simple.

or you could read the manual which will tell you......

(I admit however to doing the chain in the yard counting over this winter)

I painted my chain.
0-5m no paint
5-10m red
10-15m blue
15-20m yellow
20-25m black
25-30m no paint again
30 to 35m is painted red again
a quick glance lets you see the colour and so I know exactly how much chain has been deployed. After 3 years the colours are getting worn but still easly seen.

ah well here are some with technical specs that may help? http://www.quickitaly.com/download.asp?str=AT1000_1500_REV001C.pdf

As you will see they give around 40 m/min for one unit and 30 m/min for another (bigger) one as a no load speed using 12 v,
I work to 10 seconds = 5 metres

10 yellow
15 red and yellow
20m 2 yellow
25 2 yellow 1 red
etc, get the hamerite paint from somewhere like halford, works great.

even easier just have 15m chain and sew coloured threads into the warp - but I agree the colour system you suggest is simple and straightforward to workout.
