Scratching my head a bit here and wondering if I have a duff unit. Hopefully I've simply wired something up wrongly.

I've bought a cheap remote control for my windlass, it's pretty much the same as this one: Amazon.com

My windlass is a Lofrans Tigres with three poles. I have a genuine Lofrans relay box and a hard wired switch which is all working fine. So it's not a problem with the windlass, relay, or power supply. The remote handsets have fresh batteries and the light comes on when you press a button.

The rx for the cheap remote has four connections. Positive to the positive power on the relay box, straight from the battery. Negative to the common (middle of three) on the switching part of the relay box. And the white and yellow control wires go to the other two control terminals.

If I was any good at uploading pictures I would be able to explain this better!

Have I wired it wrongly? Is it maybe a pairing issue? Or do I have a defective unit?

The first step is to test the winch remote with a multimeter. Wire the red and black to a known source of 12v.

Pressing the up button should produce 12v between the white and black wires, and pressing down should produce 12v between the yellow and black wires (or vice versa).

I have bought these cheap remotes before, and use one to switch on my cockpit light before I get on board. I had to get an electronics friend to check mine which wouldn’t work, he said the soldering was terrible and resoldered the pcb for me. It now works like a dream and has done so for several years. I’m also planning to use one to fire my windlass relay when I get round to it.

I have a similar device for our windlass and your connections should be sound. Try noelex's test suggestion and see if your unit is defective. The remote I bought, ages ago now, came with two handsets and both still work fine ...
