Have just bought a Beneteau 331 ( yes, I know all the AWB jokes) and need to fit a electric windlass. Can anyone advise which is the best to fit into the recess in the foredeck behind the lid of the anchor locker. I looked at a 373 today which had a windlass with a drum where the drum was a good 4" above the deck level. Is this a good idea?

Firstly may I congratulate you on a sound buy!! I've a 331 with an electric windlass there. It is no problem with the drum (quite useful as an additional) tying up point, the only pain is that occasionally a sheet gets caught in it. Can't remember the exact model I've got, if its helpful I'll take a note when on the boat this w/e.

I had a 331 and fitted a "Quick Windlass" can't remember the exact model but it was around 700-800W (not the 1000). It was the Vertical type witrh a gypsy & drum. My boat (purchased new in 2000) came with approx 25meters of 10mm cahin & 30 metres of warp (believe it's a plastimo anchoring kit) so I requested the 10mm gypsy (comes as standard with the 8mm gypsy but you can specify the 10mm option at no additional charge). You need calibrated chain to fit the gypsy properly and I did a lot of measurements of my chain to verify that it was OK. It fitted perfectly.

The drum does occasionally catch the genoa sheets but the installation fitted fine, all workings fit behind the ply cover accessible from the forecabin. The caseplate extends about 1cm into the anchor locker and the anchor locker lid closes without any fouling.
