More than curious...

Which location (including Geographic region, Country, Region, Spot/s) do you use on Windguru or Windfinder.

Thanks

I have set it to yachting but kite surfing gives more locations. Given up trying to use the map option.

Then look for the point closest to me. Sometimes an island has several, in that case the most exposed one may be more accurate.

The exception is Trinidad I usually look at Tobago if I am thinking of sailing between Trinidad and Grenada..

If I am trying to catch a windshift I look at Passage weather as well.

Curious about that as I had assumed Windguru, like most weather sites on the web, was just another representation of GFS data. Given that GFS is, at best, on 30Nm centres, the variation between close locations should be slight.

The only add on I'm aware of is that Windguru has a sort of lookup table for specific locations with some local variations. Tarifa is one such, and the only one I've seen, where a modified wind figure is given in addition to the standard speed and gust, see this example.

Edit: The actual answer to the OP question is that, like CS, I'm currently using Gib, Gib.

Edit2: Prefer to use zyGrib to get an idea of whats going on around an area

UK then Saltcoats/Ardrossan, find it very good usually. Just back in from an afternoon sailing and it was spot on.

Windguru
Australia and New Zealand / New Zealand / Auckland / Takapuna / Coromandel / Bay of Islands

Brilliant. Over time it has proven it's accuracy and become my primary weather reference source. The same for several friends I have cruising the S Pacific region.

Couldn't find that location. Could you send a link to it please? Thanks

Agree about it being brilliant. Have used it myself for years. Can't find Coromandel or Bay of Islands on Windguru. Link please.

Thanks

Had to search specifically for Coromandel and Bay of Islands (within iPhone app). They are now stored as Favourites.

There's an app for that!

Superb. Thanks. Now on homepage. You have just made my life much easier!!!

In reply to original OP, Europe, UK, ALL, Shoreham (Brighton) at the mo. Also watch Europe,UK, ALL, Troon to keep an eye on the rain!!!

I have found Windguru accurate to the hour most of the time. Very impressed.

I've used Windguru for years and it has always been good.

If there isn't a nearby location, you can simply create one with a custom Lat / Long e.g. I have ones for my home, Bramble Bank, EC1 buoy etc.

I've used it at Hayling Island and Gran Canaria for years, also once in Seattle where it seemed to be OK. I always presumed it works better at windsurfing sites where they get feedback from users, I did try to use it in the Bosphorus once and it was rubbish. So was everything else, though. I find the WRF data much better than the GFS.
