I attended a protest on Coniston over the weekend to support the protest against the 10mph speed limit on Windermere. There was a small turnout of about 10 to 20 boats.

With the number of power boats used on Windermere, which I guess is about 5,000 per year, where is all the support against the ban or are people happy to let the ban come into force and take no action??!!

PS I saw water ski-ing on Coniston and the wardens took no action, this was with only a handful of boats, if more people had supported the protest the wardens would have been unable to take any action.

The fine for speeding was only £20 anyway, if you compare this with the cost to launch and park your car for Windermere, apporx £50, then you can ski on Coniston for £10 launch and free parking and 2 fines!!!!

I think most people have given up Windemere as a lost cause. Apathy or resignation to the fact that "you can't fight city hall"? Either way its just another nail in the coffin of power boats generally.

Hi,

I stick to carrying out protests on Windermere itself. In June we had over 500 boats in the main rally against the ban. We have various people on our side and are still working at getting the Ban repealed. We have not given up yet....although I have got quotes to move my main boat to Spain. This will probably happen regardless of the ban though, but I would like to keep the Ski Boat. This year and next year have been a lot quieter on the lake, great for waterskiing. I have not given up hope........yet!

Cheers

N.

Why don't people just carry on is if nothing has changed? This is a classic case of a by-law that is unenforcable. At the height of the season there are thousands of motor boats on the lake. What are the authorities and wardens going to do if all of them are "speeding"?

Just ignore them. Remember what happened to Poll Tax!!

We used to mess about on Windermere from being kids. Played about with an old speed boat for a bit, but soon got bored going round in circles with that. Then we had a little 8ft saily motor/row boat that nearly killed us all!! Then a National Ospray which was realy great fun and you realy felt you had been some where, cruising Windermere with that. But then we got a V8 cuddy cabin thingy.

First, it cost a fortune to park up and launch the boat.
Wife had big arguements with parking attendant. Cos after paying for the day, she took the car to the shop. He did not want to let her back without paying again!! He lost out on that one.

Signs every where saying no mooring, or only half an hour or tow boataway. It was depressing. Took dinghy to the shore. Warden wanted two quid! Son sat on drivers seat, warden cursed.
Soon got pissed off with the place and went to sea.

Now the big thing I cant understand is. My P35 was originally on Windermere. What the hell would anyone do with that on a blummin lake twelve miles long. Theres some P55's as well. They must all want there heads looking at playing about on that miserable unfriendly, warden infested, rain soaked, toffy nosed musty pubs at extortunate prices, type place..../forums/images/icons/frown.gif

Your not a fan then?

We have actually had a great year on the lake helped obviously by the weather but like you feel the need to go further than ten miles up and down. Speed limit doesn't help either.

I am also amazed at some of the boats up there. Currently Windermere Aquatic have on display and for sale an Astondoa 46, an Endurance 39 and most bizarrly of all a Bahia powerboat which looks like its capable of 70 knots +. To use on Windermere?

Curiously my observation on boat usage would be that the owners of bigger vessels use them as holiday homes and it is the sub 30' brigade that regularly get out on the water.

Have sadly concluded that Menorca is not practical as a base due to lack of suitable flights.

Majorca is looking good though, have just returned from a fact finding mission there (FACT: Its sunny and warm there FACT: The Beer is cold).

Will PM you with details when I get a few minutes

Holiday Homes

I think you're right about the bigger boats being used as holiday homes. It's the same in Poole - much cheaper to spend £2-300K on a boat and £several K per year to park it somewhere with a view of the Harbour than to spend £1m (if you're lucky) on the bricks and mortar equivalent. And you never know: you might even take it out occasionally..............

The sad thing is that Windermere is getting better. After several years of dragging my boat around the UK and Europe, circumstances dictated that the boat must stay put this year- so Windermere was chosen (limited time off, close to home etc.)

Most of the wardens seem a lot more freindly and although the signs say 'maximum 2 hours mooring' you are usually alright for most of the day. A couple of pubs on the lake have invested in new jetties and upgraded facillities - NotablyThe Wateredge at Ambleside.

We have had a superb year for weather and all in all the speed limit is a pointless piece of legislation.

Having said all that we are still off to the Med with Nautorious in 2005.
