Windermere storage options?

I'm hoping to sail a Sailfish 18 on Windermere next summer.

As I live about 100 miles from the LD I'm wondering whether SWMBO and other potential crew will be enthusiastic about trailing a boat that far enough times during the summer to make it worthwhile.

A long shot maybe, but can anyone suggest cheap and cheerful hard standing for the summer months, within say half an hour drive of Ferry Nab slipway?

Someones' (another forumite?) large back yard or a friendly farm location would be ideal and I'd be happy to negotiate a fair price for around 6 months.

I'm fairly handy with mechanical/electrical/PC problems if that helps .

Any suggestions gratefully considered.
 
Hmm, The only thing i think of is contacting the usual hard standig places, ie the Wardens at Ferry nab and the National Trust at Fell Foot park to see if they can offer a winter hard standing pitch, in summer. You can hire a holiday swinging mooring for IIRC £100 a week if you wanted a longer stay sometime.
Come to think of it i do know of a dinghy park in Bownes that may have a space for 6 months, i'll dig the phone number out and PM it to you.

£100 a week :eek: the last time we had boats on windermere we had two for £250 a year each, on the now non-existent wooden jetty/quay opposite the Swan, those were the the days :sigh:
 
Sad isn't it, the mooring for our 28'er is round about the £900 mark, and theres a (aparently) a 5 year waiting list. They've laid loads of new moorings recently aswell, but you'd think for all that revenue they could put reflective tape on the red bouys, harumph.
OTOH, its cheeper than the hamble.
 
We had a sailfish and kept it on Ullswater. There you could leave it on trailer by side of lake and launch it when needed. Fairfield Marine near Pooley Bridge. That way you don't have to spend ages erecting the mast each time you want to sail.

Now got larger boat on Windermere. I think moorings are available in all areas. Ring lake wardens for info. If on a floating mooring you need tender storage, or transport the tender.

On Sailfish, make sure the keel has been modified so it remains attached if the jack screw fails - many have lost their keels.

I think you'll be lucky to find any space on the actual lakeside over summer. There may be few places within 10-15 miles of the lake - Maiden Marine have a yard at Burneside that I used in the past, but they did stipulate I have the boat out by October as they have it all booked up for winter storage - http://www.maiden-marine.co.uk/boat-yard.htm
There are a few places that offer caravan and boat storage that advertise in the local paper (Westmorland Gazette - http://www.thewestmorlandgazette.co.uk/ ) from time to time - I did see an ad a month or so back but I can't find anything in the recent additions, and they doesn't seem to be much in the Yellow Pages. If you secure a mooring on the lake the Wardens can offer you winter storage in the big carpark at Ferry Nab. Good luck!

That sounds interesting (nice and tranquil), though it's not the launch preparation that is a problem, it's dragging her 200 miles every other weekend that's daunting.

This one, sail No31, has been in the family since new, so we know her quite well.

She already "smiled" at us on windermere in a gust needing a running repair to hold hull and deck together :eek:

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

Ullswater at the marina suggested is looking front runner at the moment as it also gives the option of trailing to windermere if the fancy takes us.
Staff on the phone were friendly and helpful, that's a good sign.
 
Hold on Hold on i think ive been misquoated, Its Aprox £100 a week for a holiday mooring, that people only take for a few days. Ofcource thats going to be exspensive, it how they make their money. for a 28' boat we pay £900 a year, so £17 a week!!

It wasn't my intention to misquote :) , I understood what you meant by the £110/week, that it was for short duration.

It looks like a swinging summer mooring works out at around £600 for my 18'6"er but then you have trailer parking (I had one pinched from windermere) and car parking to worry about as well as needing a tender.

The Pooley Br marina option is still looking best, they still seem to have vacancies next year so please don't tell anyone ;)
 
Boat storage

Coniston Hall caravan site has a boat storage area, usually for boats used on Coniston but it may be worth an enquiry. Their caravan site fees are very reasonable.
