Windermere Floods

Got an emergency call last night to tell me that there had been a flash flood on Windermere from another berth holder and in 8 hours the Lake had risen 5ft! The main Issue being the Jetties are fixed in the Marina and the boat was tied loosely to it (Could take a rise or fall of about 3 feet...Not 5ft!) Got there at 9pm last night, put on wetsuit and the water was up to my waist on the Jetties. Managed to loosen the ropes off and secure our three boats with my brother but after 2 hours in Windermere was frozen! A lot of other boats were at listing badly and at least 3 were taking on water. If you know any one with a boat up there please tell them. The main road is also flooded so had to drive by Newby Bridge. There is bad damage around my port Cleats and Stanchions so an Insurance claim is on the cards. At least it hasn't sunk yet.

What worries me is that the Marina had no staff there trying too loosen off boats and have not even bothered calling berth holders to warn us. Absolutely disgusting! A few of the 35ft+ boats were in real trouble. What do we pay all those pennies for!

Cheers

Paul

I know where his boat is, two jetties down from mine, I have just spoken to Aquatics, who say yes the water is very high and they are doing everthing they can, so far they cant see any damage.

Think I will go up this afternoon to check, just for my piece of mind.

Thats a disgrace. The marina has a duty of care to you and your boat and that should at the very least extend to calling you to inform you that your boat is in danger and should really mean that they make efforts to ensure that boats in their care are safe
Name and Shame these shysters please

I was in the Marina Village but all moorings affected including Aquatics. At 11pm last night staff and Police were at Aquatics tring to sort it out, at the Marina Village no one! There could be a lot of Insurance Claims.

Jim, Your Boat looked OK although the jetty was under 4ft of water!

Water was still very high last night, but all the boats looked ok, Aquatics seemed to have done a very good job of adjusting all the mooring lines.

Re:River Ouse Floods

Dave

I live by the river just south of York and boat on Windermere, the difference between Windermere and the Ouse is that boatowners down here expect the floods and prepare for them - the curent level is high but not abnormal. Most of the pontoons are floating, including I think Naburn Marina.

From what I have read on here I am glad my boat is in the Car Park at WMV and not in the water.

But WHY????

Do the marinas not have floating pontoons?

Most of the pontoons in WMV are fixed, there is I believe one floating one but I think they plan on replacing it with a fixed one.

Aquatics are currently ripping out their fixed pontoons, about time, and replacing them with floating ones.

So why do WMV want to use fixed pontoons? Surely floating is the sencible option?

Yes but floating pontoons wobble making it difficult for ladies in stilletos not to spill their drinks :)

I think the current situation is exceptional. Although it is normal for the pontoons to be underwater at some stage during the winter it is the rate of rise that is unusual and that caught everyone out. Within the normal rate and level of rise and fall the fixed pontoons are fine.

On the surface it looks like a black mark against WMV staff and a big pat on the back to Aquatics but that might be unfair as I don't know all of the facts.

Martyn,

Perhaps you could let me know when your feet start to get wet as you sip your Foster's in The Ship, and then I'll know I better start worrying about just how secure the floating pontoons are at Naburn!

Makes you wonder about all the hundreds of boats out of the water just resting on sleepers and drums, could cause a big blockage at Cawood bridge!

I am going to go back up on Saturday just to check!

Aquatics 10/10...WMV 4/10!
