Wind vanes on modern high performance cruisers

Has anyone out there get any personal experience of using a wind vane self steering sysem on a modern high performance cruiser of about 40 ft length. I used to have a Hydrovane on a Sigma 362, brilliant, but I am looking for some direct input from someone who has used one on the likes of a First 40.7, Dehler 39, X412 or similar.

Personally, I don't have any experience but I know that Monitors have been used on the transpac and BOC events. I seem to recall that on a single handed transpac one guy was flying a spinnaker with one for most the 2000 miles from San Francisco to Hawaii. Here's the web site.
