It depends upon what you want the information for.

The only regular and reliable observations in mid-Channel are from Channel Light Vessel. From the NDBC site for the latest observations. I do not know why it does not now appear on http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/marine/observations/. Ships on passage do report weather but it is hit and miss what you get in any particular area.

Possible the best is to use the latest computer analysed chart ie for T=0 using GFS GRIB files or the UK NAE meso-scale analysis at http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/cgi-...=uv10&HH=0&ZOOM=0&ARCHIV=0&RES=0&WMO=&PERIOD=.

These analyses will be based on all available data. The NAE should be a little better than the GFS as it analyses on a finer grid and, I think, makes better use of satellite data.

Another source of data is the ASCAT satellite - http://manati.orbit.nesdis.noaa.gov/datasets/ASCATData.php/. Click on you area of interest. Magnify to see the wind arrows.

PS I must have been jet lagged last night. Channel LV does appear on http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/marine/observations/.
